Missouri farmer Robert Vanmeter utilizes a Modified Bulldozer that features hands-only operation and an access lift. Conversion to total hand control was done by his friend Lonnie Mikes, who worked at Mid-American Industrial Equipment Co. in Kansas City. Mikes tapped the low-pressure (150 pounds per square inch) source of the machine's hydraulic system to power single-acting cylinders that operate the master clutch, apply the brakes of both tracks at once, and assist the left- and right-hand steering levers. Pulling the left valve lever disengages the clutch, affecting both tracks; while pulling the right valve lever brakes both tracks simultaneously. The two steering levers were left in place, but the hydraulic-assist application makes them very easy to maneuver. To access the bulldozer's seat, Vanmeter had a boom-style lift installed. It consists of: (a) a heavy pipe mounted vertically to the side of the operator platform such that it can pivot inside its mounting bracket; (b) another pipe hinged to the top of the vertical pipe, creating a boom; (c) a hand-powered hydraulic cylinder that raises and lowers the boom, and (d) a lift sling that hooks onto the end of the boom. Vanmeter fastens the sling onto the boom, raises and rotates the boom until he is over the seat, and then lowers himself onto it. Other items that Vanmeter has had added to the bulldozer are a rear view mirror and a CB.
