Bean Buggy Sprayer
The modified Bean Buggy Sprayer
Bean Buggy Sprayer spraying beans

Farmer City, IL, farmer Bob Yeagle (having quadriplegia) and his neighbor Kyle Kopp (whom Yeagle works for part-time) have modified a May-Wes "Wesley" series Bean Buggy Sprayer that Yeagle uses to spot-spray weeds around the farm. The buggy already came with electric start and hydrostatic drive—both necessary features for Yeagle. The two neighbors then (a) redesigned the front end to include a switch-controlled, 3-foot electric screw-type actuator that raises and lowers the seat from wheelchair level to the operator's position; (b) changed the steering method from a steering wheel to a "T" handlebar with pegs at each end of the "T" for Yeagle to grip; and (c) added a locking throttle, a canopy for shade, a box for the cellular phone, extra mirrors, a large drink holder, and an extra fuel tank. The bean buggy carries two spray tanks with separate sprayer hoses and nozzles. This allows Yeagle to spray both corn and bean fields without having to rinse out the tank and re-mix chemicals. The sprayer hose not in use hangs from a peg behind the operator's seat, while the one in use is supported by a peg on the steering bar. The spray nozzles are lever-controlled, so they can be actuated with the palm of the hand. A boom sprayer has also been added to the back of the buggy for spraying yards and larger areas.

Caution symbol Caution Notes: Always follow all instructions provided by the manufacturer for each chemical being used. This includes adhering to the correct application rate and using appropriate personal protective equipment, which is especially important because a Bean Buggy Sprayer operator is less protected and closer to the spray area.
