Sliding-Door Opener
Sliding-Door Opener
Two photos—(1) the garage door opener motor and drive mechanism mounted beside the sliding door, and (2) the sliding door in open position.

Colfax, IL, farmer Jim Kruse created a Sliding-Door Opener from a standard remote-control-operated garage door opener. Its motor and drive mechanism were mounted beside the door low enough that it can be easily adjusted and Sliding-Door Opener (1) repaired from a wheelchair. The opener's drive cable runs vertically up the wall and over a pulley before fastening to the top of the door. The cable/pulley system was designed so that it could pull horizontally against the top of the door to reduce stress on the door's rollers and track.
