Tubing Sap-Collection System (Online Plans)

This Tubing Sap-Collection System enables one to gather the maple tree sap without having to walk great distances or carry heavy buckets. Plastic tubing is attached to taps in the trees, and the sap runs downhill by gravity to a central collection tank. The system presented here, which services 240 taps strung over 6 acres of trees in northern Wisconsin, can be scaled up or down for various-size operations. Its components include: a solar-powered 12-volt Shurflo 4048 vacuum pump (4 gal./min.), 5,000 feet of 3/16-inch tubing, taps, T-fittings, splices, a 144-gallon livestock watering tank, and a smaller tank to transport the sap to the evaporator. The website-viewable plans include: a listing of the supplies needed, step-by-step instructions (with numerous photos) on how to build the system, and a video of the same.
