Homemade Sliding-Door Opener/Closer
Red sliding barn door with hand-crank cable winch mounted to it and the cable stretching to side of barn where it is attached to an eye hook.

This Homemade Sliding-Door Opener/Closer consists of (1) a hand-cranked cable winch that's mounted on the door itself, (2) an eye-screw located some distance to the left of the door, and (3) another eye-screw to the right of the door. (In some cases, an anchoring post for the eye-screw may need to be added next to the barn/shop. See the video link for clarification.) To open the door, one spools out the cable to the appropriate eye-screw, slips the hook into the eye-screw, then cranks the winch to pull the door open. To close the door, the user switches the cable/hook to the other eye-screw and cranks it shut. (Consider an electric cable winch if upper extremity limitations would so dictate.)

Estimated Cost Cost range: See below

Limitations Limitations Addressed by Product: Lower extremity, Upper extremity, Strength/endurance
