Universal Backhoe Thumb
Universal Backhoe Thumb

A Universal Backhoe Thumb, which affixes to the boom, is designed to allow one to dig and load with the same machine (e.g., three-point, sub-frame, or skid steer backhoe, and mini-excavator.) It can be used to assist in carrying out such material-handling tasks as land clearing; demolition; brush removal; rock, log, and pipe placement; and loading/unloading. Some thumbs are permanently welded onto boom, others bolted; and some allow for a limited amount of angle adjustment. While jaw length varies (depending on model), all either fold back or slide out of the way when not in use. (Hydraulically operated thumbs are also available but are more expensive.)

Estimated Cost Cost range: $150-$375, depending on width, jaw length, how affixed, etc.
