To minimize the physical wear and tear of constantly bending, getting up/down, and kneeling, Mount Vernon (WA) organic farmer Glen Johnson built a Double-Bike Veggie Cart that straddles his three-row, 48-inch-wide beds. Purchasing a used double-framed, four-wheeled bicycle, he and a machinist friend took off the bucket seats, widened the frames (so the two sets of wheels spanned the vegetable beds), then added supports for a padded board on which he lies facing down to plant, thin, weed, or pick. The lie-on board can be adjusted from side to side to position it over each of the three rows. Steel frames welded in front and behind the board hold planting flats or harvest buckets. Both bike frames have pedals, which Johnson turns by hand to propel the device through the field. In addition, the lie-on board flips up so he can sit upright when going from one bed to another.
