Handling and sorting can be difficult because pigs often don't cooperate. Researchers at Minnesota's West-Central Research & Outreach Center attempted to address the problem via a Homemade Pig Handling/Sorting Tub with a concrete runway at its entrance. Driven by two people holding a tarp, the animals are moved down the runway and turned into the tub at the far end. The tub consists of a circular corral with swinging gate that's used to push them into a single-file chute leading to the scale. (The chute is curved, which prevents them from seeing what's ahead.) Once on the scale, each pig is weighed, vaccinated, administered needed treatment, etc. At market time, they are herded directly into the truck; otherwise, they're returned to the lot for further finishing.
