Cooling Vest

A Cooling Vest is designed to lower body temperature and make exposure to warm environments more bearable. There are primarily four types: Evaporative – soaked in water then lightly wrung out; the water interacts with cooling crystals or other cooling agents, reducing body temperature as it evaporates. Ice-chilled-cooling-energy packs activated in a freezer then placed in special pockets inside the vest to provide the cooling. Phase-change-also placed in pockets inside the vest, these packs contain non-toxic oils and fats that solidify (like wax) at 55-65º; providing cooling down to those temperatures for up to 6 hours. Cool-flow-uses a motor-powered pumping system that continually pumps water through the vest; intended for working conditions where one is stationary for long periods of time.

Cost: $50-$500, depending on vest type, cooling system, etc.

Impairment Category:

Caution: Individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) should consult with a health care provider prior to using a cooling vest. There is some question of the usefulness of such vests for persons with SCI.
