Homemade Chicken Tractor Mover

Pulling a chicken tractor (especially one on skids) to a new location in the pasture can be a problem for several reasons: (1) It may snag on growing vegetation or dig into wet ground; and (2) the chickens, if they don’t respond quickly, may get caught under the framing. One inexpensive option is this Homemade Chicken Tractor Mover, which consists of (1) a full-width, metal-pipe push bar at the back, affixed to the lower portion of rear vertical frames; (2) a bicycle wheel on each side at the front, and (3) metal pipe on each side running from the push bar to the wheel hub. Pushing upward on the bar raises the pen off the ground so it can be moved. Being able to push the entire unit instead of having to pull it is easier on one’s back, transferring more of the load to the legs; it also allows one to see the back portion of the pen to ensure it’s not dragged over the chickens and to see any eggs laid so they don’t get broken. Lastly, it’s helpful to have the feeding/watering opening at the back where one is pushing.
