Homemade Sickle Bar Mower Winch

A remote-controlled winch attached to his sickle bar mower allows Independence, VA, farmer Delmar Cornett to raise/lower the sickle bar from the tractor seat. The winch is powered by the tractor’s battery. As to the set-up, Cornett (a) welded the winch onto a steel plate bolted to the left side of the mower; (b) welded a 5-foot length of 2-inch square tubing to the same plate; (c) bolted on a 3-inch pulley to the top of the tubing ; (d) welded a chain link on back of the sickle bar about 2 feet from the end; and (e) passed the winch cable over the pulley and down to the link on the sickle bar. To mow, Cornett press the remote’s “down” button to lower the sickle bar then unhooks the cable and reels it back up onto the winch. When finished, he re-hooks the cable onto the sickle bar then raises it up via the remote.
