The Electronic Cattle Guard, a self-contained unit about the size of a tackle box, is equipped with a heat-sensitive eye that triggers a battery-powered alarm. It hangs on one of the gate posts, with the eye facing the other post. When an animal approaches, the alarm is activated, making a loud noise that scares the animal away from the opening.
