Forever Grateful Ranch
Where Jim’s Spirit and Outlook Live Strong
Jim C. farms 30 acres of pistachios with his wife and son in Chowchilla, California.
For him, farming is more than a job—it’s a lifelong calling he has no plans of giving up.
“I’ve been farming since I was seven,” he says. After his father left the military, the family returned to agriculture in Stevinson, California, hauling hay to local dairy farms. Jim grew up helping wherever he was needed.
Years later, a hit-and-run accident cost Jim one of his legs. After six weeks in the hospital, he returned home determined to keep working, using a walker and adapting to life on one leg. His renewed perspective even inspired the name of his farm: Forever Grateful Ranch.
While searching for solutions, Jim learned about AgrAbility through an article featuring Tennessee AgrAbility and through the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). A safety assessment revealed his tractor lacked rollover protection, steps, and grab bars. To climb aboard, he had been parking on a hill and pulling himself up with a rope.
California AgrAbility staff helped him explore safer options, including portable hand controls for his forklift. With NRCS funding covering most of a replacement tractor, and after a long approval process, Jim is now continuing the work he loves.
